The Last Lecture Speech (By Randy Pausch) This speech was given at McConomy Auditorium at Carnegie Mellon University on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. The speech was called, Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. The topic was about having dreams and perusing them, even though you may not get the exact results you were hoping for, you can still grow as a person. One example of this was that Randy wanted to be a professional football player. Due to his size this was never going to happen, but he did play youth football, (not very well). Randy learned many of his life lessons while be criticized by his couches to work hard and give one hundred percent. Randy’s speech started with an attention getter that involved the current name of the speech day which was called Journey’s. This is when members of the academic community share their insights of their personal and professional journey. Because Randy was dying with cancer and only had months to live, he felt that the former name for the speeches was much more appropriate. They used to be called the Last Lecture. The premise was if you could only give one last lecture before you died what would it be. Randy’s comment was â€Å"I finally nailed the venue and they renamed it† Obviously Randy’s credibility and reason to listen were undeniable. Many people could give a speech as if it was going to be their last, but for most it likely wouldn’t be their last. In Randy’s situation it was going to be his last.
